Using the WordPress Mobile App

  1. What is the name of the app?

WordPress

  1. Who is the publisher/creator?

An Automattic Program

  1. What platforms is the app available on? (Android, iOS, etc)

This application is available on iOs via the Apple App Store, Androids via Google Play, and a Desktop interface.

  1. Provide a brief description of the application’s functionality.

From the Apple iOS App Store: “Manage your WordPress blog or website on the go, from your iOS device: view  your stats, moderate comments, create and edit posts and pages, and upload media. All you need is a WordPress.com blog or a self-hosted WordPress.org site running 4.0 or higher…”

  1. What are your overall impressions?

I created a blog/base camp site for an INTE course last semester using WordPress and completely used my laptop computer and the desktop interface solely for the last 10 months. I honestly didn’t realize there was a mobile version of the application available for me to use. After downloading and posting and exploring the functionality, I was extremely impressed. It is extremely easy to manage my blog and web page from an iPad or even an iPhone. I don’t need to have a full desktop interface, keyboard and mouse in order to maintain my site, dustinpettit.com.

  1. How usable did you find application?

I found the mobile application extremely easy to use, especially when managing my blog posts. I figured that aspect would be very easy to use, because to me, it seemed like sending emails. The area that impressed me the most was the ability to personalize my theme, menus and pages from the iOS application. My biggest fear when trying to manage these aspects from a mobile device was the size of the screen and having to use “touch” functionality rather than clicking and being able to see what I was doing on a large screen. It was great being able to play around with my website design from Starbucks while playing on my iPad.

  1. How could the app be used in an educational setting?

I think the WordPress application could be used in an educational setting in many different formats. Obviously, I’m using this application in an educational setting now to keep a personal base camp website for my personal and academic journeys while creating my graduate degree. I think it would be a great application to use in a high school learning environment to generate discussion and collaboration between students. I know for one that I have been able to find my distinct “voice” while blogging on the internet for graduate school, that is completely different than the way I talk and interact in formal settings. I think this application would be great to allow students/professionals at all levels find their voice and be able to share that voice at any time, without having to be tethered to a computer to post.

  1. Any additional thoughts comments concerns

I love this app; I will probably begin to use the app more exclusively than the desktop version. I love doing homework and working on my base camp website while drinking coffee or beer out in public, so being able to use my iPad now to work on it all makes a lot of sense to me.

  1. Would you recommend the app?

I would recommend the application for every student or professional with a WordPress website or blog. It’s a fantastic and simple application to use on the go.
