First off, it’s pronounced Grossen Bart. The ß = ss. In German Grossen Bart means “Big Beard”. So, if you hadn’t already guessed, the brewery and beers all all facial haired themed.
I first wondered into Großen Bart in January 2015 with my wife while we out looking for a local spot since we were new to Colorado. The taproom reminded me of my favorite spot back in Indy as soon as we went in – chill music, familiar smells of a rolling boil and spent grain, dim lighting and extremely personable staff.
GB is a small 7 barrel brewery. I was most impressed right off the bat with the QUALITY of each of the beers on tap. One of my biggest pet peeves with newly opened breweries is that they rush to hit the market without quality products. Over time, they usually work out the kinks and actually learn to use the equipment their brewing on (aka dial everything in), but you can’t open without a solid lineup on tap. GB nailed it. Each of their beers were authentic and fit the styles beautifully. Another thing I noted and loved was their use of multiple yeasts throughout their portfolio of beers. Pet Peeve number 2 is the use of a single yeast across all beers. Yeast has the biggest affect on flavor of a beer, and use of a single strain can make beers taste way too similar. GB uses many strains of yeast to be able keep beers true to style.
If you’re a fan of IPA’s try the Chin Curtain. It’s bitter as hell and extremely refreshing. Easily my favorite IPA in the area.
